A doggone good time

WINSTED — Quick-legged wiener dogs took to the grass Saturday, Aug. 6, at the town’s Little League Field for the second annual Wiener Dog Race. The dachshund race was being held to benefit the family of Dale Cox Jr., who died in a car accident last December. Cox was a junior at Oliver Wolcott Technical High School and was working on rebuilding a 1967 Ford Mustang at the time of his death.Organizer David Whitney of Charter Community Television said he was impressed with the turnout for the event, which saw owners from all over the state bring 20 dogs to race.“We were worried this year because we were not sure we would have a good turnout,” Whitney said. “I’m pretty impressed with the high turnout.”The dogs raced (or more times than not, veered off) a small course that went down the baseball field. Most of the dogs, and their owners, seemed to be at the event more for fun than any need for speed, and all enjoyed some time in the sun.
