Board of Ed sees surplus

SALISBURY — The Board of Education is looking at a projected surplus of $79,288 in the current budget, Chairman Roger Rawlings reported Monday, July 18.Rawlings explained that the Salisbury Central School (SCS) budget was finalized before the Region One School District concluded its negotiations for health insurance. The net result for SCS was $65,043 less than the budgeted amount for health insurance. The regional school district includes the elementary schools of Falls Village, Sharon, Salisbury, Cornwall, Kent and North Canaan and the regional high school. The school also received unexpected tuition reimbursements from the state ($13,000), and grant funds for salaries ($10,185). That helped offset $35,543 for an outplacement that was not anticipated in May, when the SCS budget was finished. There are still invoices to be paid so the final figure is still in play.In a phone interview Tuesday, July 19, Rawlings explained that in June, after a presentation from the school board, the Board of Finance agreed that surplus funds up to $100,000 could be transferred into the school board’s building capital fund. Rawlings said that the windows in the lobby and the ramp in the upper building still need to be replaced. Also at the meeting, Jeff Lloyd reported that the window replacement project in the cafeteria and in the middle school is on schedule. And the board voted to increase the price of ice cream and snacks in the coming school year from 50 cents to 75 cents, after a lengthy and wide-ranging discussion.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
