Arrest made in motor vehicle death last October

NORTH CANAAN — A teenager was arrested last week and charged following an investigation into a motor vehicle accident that claimed the life of 43-year-old Brian Brazzale Sr. on Oct. 27, 2010.Cooper Brown of East Canaan, who turned 17 shortly after the accident, turned himself in at Troop B June 2 after learning of a warrant for his arrest. He was charged with negligent homicide with a motor vehicle and traveling too fast for conditions.Brown was driving east on Route 44 on the west side of town in the middle of the afternoon in heavy rain, according to the state police. He lost control on a curve. His 1998 Dodge pickup truck spun into the westbound lane. Its right side slammed into the front of a 1998 Dodge pickup driven by Brian Brazzale Jr. The front seat passenger, Brian Brazzale Sr., died of his injuries. Police said he was not wearing a seatbelt and his airbag failed to deploy.The elder Brazzale, a native of Sharon who had recently moved to North Canaan, had lived for many years in Lakeville. He is survived by four children.Brown, a senior at Housatonic Valley Regional High School, was released on a written promise to appear in Bantam Superior Court June 13. Both charges are misdemeanors, as opposed to more serious felony charges. The negligent homicide charge carries a maximum penalty of a $1,000 fine and six months in jail.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
