Mosca joins Washington Town Board

WASHINGTON — Karen Mosca is the newest member of the Washington Town Board, finishing the unexpired term of Councilman William Murphy. Murphy resigned April 14 from the board. “He was a fabulous gentleman to work with and he contributed to all aspects of town government and will be greatly missed,” said Mary Alex, town clerk. Murphy said he left for personal reasons, but did not give further explanation. His term had another two years before expiring. It was his first term as a councilman; he came on the board to fill the unexpired term of Councilman Alan Rappleyea.Town Supervisor Florence Prisco confirmed Mosca is Murphy’s replacement.“We did replace William Murphy,” she said. “Karen Mosca was appointed. She’s going to fill out the unexpired term of William Murphy, so she has to run in the November election [if she wants to retain the seat beyond that].”“I would just like to see that the Town Board continues to do the great job they have been doing,” Mosca said. “I am looking forward to serving. I have lived in the community a number of years and I’m hoping I’ll be able to contribute to the wonderful town of Washington that we have.” Mosca first lived in the town of North East in 1964 and worked in the village of Millbrook as a teacher at St. Joseph’s School. In 1981 she moved into the Millbrook to raise her two children with her husband. She then took a job in 1985 at the Dover School District. Mosca is a reading specialist currently working with first- and second-graders at Wingdale Elementary School in the Dover School District. Mosca is also a three-year member of the Comprehensive Plan Committee and vice president of the teachers union in Dover. She said she is excited to have the opportunity to be on the Town Board and to get involved with different aspects of the community. “This is the first time I have ever served on the Town Board,” Mosca said. “I had been interested in the idea for a while. I have been very busy with other activities, and when this opportunity came up I thought this would be a good time to place my hat in the ring.”

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
