Jackets declaw Wildcats, 14-2

WINSTED — Eager to squeeze in a game after a week of rainouts, the Gilbert Yellowjacket softball squad endured the rain to host Wolcott Tech on Monday, May 24. The Jackets did not allow ugly weather to disturb their pre-game Senior Day ceremonies, recognizing the efforts seniors Jess Shotwell and Jen Fritch.Gritty Gilbert starter Jaime LaChance took to the mound once again, quickly scattering the Wildcats in the top of the first by inducing a pair of groundouts and tallying her first strikeout of the day.Shotwell led off the inning with a infield single that she quickly turned into two by swiping second on the next pitch. Courtney Hoxie laid down an expert bunt that generated a bad throw to first, allowing Shotwell to score and delivering Hoxie to third.Rachel Wendell drove Hoxie in for the second run of the day with a triple and added a run of her own off a sacrifice hit by Mackenzie Russo. Gilbert continued to pour on the early offense, scoring off an RBI base hit by Carissa Tuozzo and taking advantage of a handful of shoddy throws by the Wildcat defense. The Jackets led 6-0 after one.Wolcott Tech was able to add one of their own in the second and nearly added another off a wild pitch that was quickly corralled by Jacket catcher Emily Owens and tossed to LaChance for the out at home plate.Gilbert’s lively bats continued to pick up runs in the following inning, when a lead-off walk to Hoxie was converted into a RBI double by Wendell. Russo brought in another run with a single, as did Fritch with a bunt down the line. The Jackets added another four to secure a commanding 10-1 lead heading into the third. The Jacket defense was as sharp as their hitting despite miserable conditions. LaChance received some help from her fielders as a heads-up play by Hoxie allowed her to turn the double and cauterize any hope for the Wildcats to cut the lead.Wolcott’s woes were far from over in the fourth, as the Jacket bench players were able to chalk up a few runs with some solid hitting. Those secondary scoring efforts were capped with a two-RBI double by Wendell. Gilbert extended their lead to 14-2 heading into the top of the fifth.LaChance and her defense made quick work of the Wildcats in the fifth, and with conditions on the field becoming increasingly trecherous, the umpires called the game giving the Jackets an official 14-2 five-inning win at home.Gilbert head coach Mark Douglass commented on his team’s growth as the regular season winds down. “Our progress has been tremendous,” he said. “We still make blunders, but I rarely see them make them again. I’d say that’s very good progress.”The Jackets hit .500 with a record of 9-9, while Wolcott Tech remains winless at 0-17.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
