AMENIA — Stepping inside Andrea Salvadore’s new pasta and sauce shop, Andrea’s Pasta di Casa, feels like walking into a private home. That is, if that home was the culmination of generations of traditional Italian cooking.Pasta di Casa is located on the second floor of a newly renovated brick building on Route 343 in downtown Amenia. For Salvadore, it’s another career move, which includes a long tenure at Harney & Sons Fine Teas, operating a bed and breakfast out of her home and running the office for The Millerton News when it was located on the first floor of a Main Street building. It’s also, according to Salvadore, her last.“There’s something about this building,” she said, watching a pot of simmering meatballs carefully. “It just speaks to you.”The new business owner said Peggy McEnroe, a friend and owner of the Back in the Kitchen deli and cafe that opened on the bottom floor, contacted her and asked if she had any interest in opening a business there.Salvadore was hesitant at first. She said that although she immediately decided she wanted to open a shop, she waited until she had a solid business plan before she told her husband and children.“The kids said, ‘Go for it,’” Salvadore said. The shop opened last month. A lifetime cook with a catering business in her past, Salvadore traces her culinary roots to her grandmother and “wonderful aunts,” who taught her how to make pasta and many of the family’s Italian recipes. Her grandfather and grandmother both came from the same village in Italy, Cassino, and married when they immigrated to the United States. They had eight children and 27 grandchildren. Many of the recipes Salvadore uses are her Nonna Maria’s very own, originally measured out in quantities to feed a family.The layout of Pasta di Casa is clearly meant to invoke the intimate feeling of being in a kitchen. If the brick walls and decor don’t tip you off, the heavy aroma of simmering sauces will.“This is how I wanted it, all open,” Salvadore explained. “I want people to come in and see what I’m doing.”Andrea’s Pasta di Casa sells homemade fresh pasta for approximately $5 a pound, but since there are no preservatives, you’ve got to eat it quickly. The raviolis are $12 or $13 per dozen and include butternut squash, mushroom and Gorgonzola fillings, just to name a few. There are plenty of sauces and gravies, ranging from marinara to arabiatta and basil pesto, starting at around $10 for containers between 8 and 16 oz. Finally, specialty dishes include cannelloni, lasagna, stuffed peppers and more; those dishes require seven days advance notice to prepare.Andrea’s Pasta di Casa is located on the second floor at 3312 Route 343 in Amenia. Give Salvadore a call at 845-789-1414; operating hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Monday, with extended Friday hours until 7 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday are “production days,” when she is cooking but is supposed to be closed.“Oh, I’ve got people coming in every day of the week,” she said, laughing.

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
