Housatonic student of the week

The Lakeville Journal congratulates the honorees of the student of the week program at Housatonic Valley Regional High School. FALLS VILLAGE — Mohawk Mountain is the premier location for stargazing in the area, according to Brian Hurlburt, our student of the week at Housatonic Valley Regional High School. Brian is a lover of all things intergalactic, and his reading takes him to the edges of the universe, where black holes and supernovas captivate him.The appeal of far-off places that draws Brian to the final frontier also draws him to the original frontier: the American West. Brian is an avid snowboarder who hopes to attend college in Colorado or someplace out west, where the stars at night are big and bright. His vacation trips to the Pacific Northwest have also stimulated in Brian a love for the active lifestyle of that area, and he hopes to be able to turn his love of the outdoors into a future career. While Brian has worked at Mohawk Mountain for the past few years, he has kept his options open by applying himself diligently to his study of science. Inspired by his favorite teacher, Letitia Garcia-Tripp, Brian has immersed himself in a number of science courses including physics, marine biology and forensics. As compelling as these studies are, however, Brian doesn’t just quietly toil away in a lab. He has played soccer and run track during his time at Housatonic, and he also values his family, which includes two little sisters, a younger and an older brother, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Allyn Hurlburt III. Brian represents the perfect alchemy of student, citizen, athlete and son, and his future is as bright as the stars he studies.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
