Charlotte Hungerford to make Health Center decision this spring

WINSTED — The Winsted Health Center Foundation is working with Charlotte Hungerford Hospital (CHH) on plans for a new building on the current health center campus, according to foundation Executive Director Jonathan Blum. The hospital operates the emergency department and other facilities on the health center site.Last fall, CHH announced that it was considering moving out of the Spencer Street facility. After the announcement, Torrington-based Borghesi Building & Engineering submitted an application to the town of Barkhamsted proposing to construct a one-story, 18,290-square-foot commercial health services building at 390 New Hartford Road.In January, the foundation hired real estate consulting firm Colliers International to help with plans for redeveloping the current site, including a new structure to house the emergency department.Blum said that CHH will be reviewing proposals from two developers in mid-March and that a definitive decision will be made by CHH sometime in the spring.“We believe [these proposals] will be a very exciting and viable alternative to stay here,” Blum said. The health center is located in the former location of the Winsted Memorial Hospital at 115 Spencer St.The hospital operated from 1902 until 1996 when it declared bankruptcy. After the hospital closed, the Winsted Health Center Foundation was formed to purchase the hospital facilities.
