Zumba, yoga and more at fitness center
KENT — The Mountain Falls Fitness Studio has opened in the Kent Town Center complex and is offering classes in yoga, Zumba, belly dancing and more.
Mountain Falls offered its first official class (it was yoga) on Jan. 17 and now has at least one class scheduled every day of the week. Owner Elaine LaFontan is the former owner of a women’s fitness center and currently works at a New Milford sports complex when she’s not in her own studio.
LaFontan hasn’t begun teaching classes herself yet, but she plans to. The classes currently offered at Mountain Falls include gentle yoga, vinyasa yoga, tabata (a strength training class in which participants move to a variety of stations to work different muscle groups); zumba, a dance-centered aerobic workout featuring saucy salsa music; and belly dancing, taught by a native of the West Indies.
In the spring, LaFontan plans to expand the class options by adding Pilates, TRX (a strength training system developed by the Navy SEALs that uses a person’s own body weight to provide resistance), a boot camp class and (possibly) kickboxing.
LaFontan decided to open Mountain Falls Fitness Studio after hearing people around Kent say they wanted a place where they could find affordable fitness that wasn’t focused just on machines and weights.
“A lot of people said, ‘It’s too bad Kent doesn’t have a place to take classes,’” she said. “I love to do classes. There’s a lot of camaraderie. People bring their friends, and a regular group develops. It’s also nice to have other people to help keep you motivated.”
Mountain Falls Fitness Studio can be found upstairs in the Kent Town Center complex. The entrance is wedged between Sundog Shoe and Leather and Rolling River Antiques.
The fee for most classes is $15. A 10-class pass that lasts for three months costs $120. There is also a $99 pass for one month of unlimited classes (it does not include belly dancing or TRX).
The fee for belly dance classes is $20 per class or $85 for a five-class block.
