Town meeting Jan. 13 on possible extension of sewer

KENT — The Kent Sewer Commission’s proposed addition to the sewer system, which will allow for it to provide service to Maple Street Extension, will be voted on at a town meeting at Town Hall on Thursday, Jan. 13, at 7 p.m.

The proposed project is expected to cost approximately $1,150,000, which will be provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in a combination grant and loan. The grant portion would be $287,500 and the loan portion would be $862,500. The USDA requires that the vote on the project go to town meeting before the Sewer Commission can move forward with the plan.

If the plan is approved at the town meeting, the repayment of the loan would involve annual payments of $37,057, which taxpayers would be responsible for.

While there is not yet much development on Maple Street Extension, there is property on the street that would be more easily developed with a connection to the town’s sewer system.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
