Tour des Farms: Bicycles, bands and farms, oh my

NORTH CANAAN — A greenhouse, especially one ripe with bicyclists, would seem an odd place to find a military band, but it all fit Saturday.

Freund’s Farm Market was hopping with participants in the King’s Mark Resource Conservation and Development Area’s second annual Tour des Farms.

The non-competitive bicycle tour promotes local agriculture and local buying. Participants chose between 12-, 24- and 62-mile loops, visiting farms in North Canaan, Falls Village and Cornwall. Produce that they purchased was sent ahead to the end point of the rides.

They were served lunch in the Freund’s greenhouse and were joined by the public for a free concert by the 102nd Army Band of the Connecticut National Guard.

The band performed rousing patriotic tunes, along with Red Skelton’s “Pledge of Allegiance, and popular contemporary tunes; the crowd especially seemed to get into the beat of a medley of Michael Jackson tunes.
