Ben Finkelstein

The Lakeville Journal congratulates the honorees of the student of the week program at Housatonic Valley Regional High School.

Ben Finkelstein, a senior at Housatonic Valley Regional High School, was selected as student of the week  for his work with our ninth-grade cohort groups during the first week of school. He is an excellent role model.

Ben is an outstanding student and a three-sport athlete, participating in cross-country in the fall, ski team in the winter and tennis during the spring.

Ben is a member of the National Honor Society and is the historian for the student government association and plays in the jazz band. He also is captain of the Academic Bowl team, and a member of the Geography Team.

Outside of school, Ben is a member of the Salisbury Association (a local history group), a camp counselor and a ski instructor. He is on the board of his youth group and he helps at a local computer workshop.

Ben is narrowing his college search this fall with applications to Hobart College, Union College, Dickinson College and Gettysburg College.

It is a pleasure to have Ben as the first student of the week for the 2010-11 school year.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
