Gilbert girls soccer routed in season opener, 5-1

WINSTED — A youthful Gilbert Yellowjackets girls soccer squad hosted Lewis Mills at Walker Field Tuesday, Sept. 14. Despite a strong pre-season scrimmage against Granby a few days prior, the ladies were unable to counter an overwhelming Mills offense.

Gilbert battled evenly early, quickly putting themselves in position for a corner kick they were unable to work into the back of the net. Lewis Mills answered back by ringing a hard shot off the post when Yellowjacket goalkeeper Jen Fritch came far out of her net to challenge the play.

Throughout the remainder of the first, Lewis Mills toiled exclusively in Gilbert’s end, setting up tight plays and putting shots on net throughout the half. Fritch endured more than her share of action, but Mills remained unable to finish cleanly to take the lead.

Despite Mills’ inability to capitalize on their numerous chances, there was an eerie sense for Gilbert fans that it was merely a matter of time. Sure enough, Mills moved in close to the Jacket net to ring a shot off the crossbar and quickly drilled the rebound past Fritch for the first goal of the game. Mills held their slight lead and all the momentum through the half, 1-0.

Gilbert demonstrated noticeable improvement coming out of the break, finally able to generate some offensive zone pressure of their own while keeping play far from their own net. The moment it appeared that play had firmly evened out, Mills cut through the defense and tallied a quick second goal of the game.

Reclaiming all the energy, Mills continued to make Fritch work hard in net, while Gilbert still remained frustrated offensively. Gilbert gave up a third goal, then quickly gave up the fourth, putting them deeper into the void.

The Jackets found some small amount of offense when Rachel Wendel drew a penalty shot while barreling toward the net. Gilbert was able to avoid the shutout with a successful kick, but almost immediately gave up the fifth and final goal of the affair.

The Gilbert girls return home after a three-game road trip to face cross-town rival Northwestern Regional High School on Friday, Oct. 1, at 3:45 p.m.
