All-Star bus goes to Haiti

NORTH CANAAN — A school bus that once carried students along the roads of the Region One School District will now be doing similar duty in Haiti. Ed Eastman, pastor of Greenwoods Community Church in Ashley Falls, Mass., and a part-time driver for All-Star Transportation said last week that All-Star owner Rich Dufour had donated a bus to the church’s relief effort.

Working with a faith-based organization called Partners With Haiti, Eastman and his wife went to Haiti after the Jan. 12 earthquake that devastated the already poverty-stricken country.

“We were asked if we could obtain a school bus,â€ as what  little transportation was available for children was sketchy at best and not particularly safe or reliable.

Eastman asked Dufour to keep his eye out for a used bus for sale. Dufour and his family, however, had a better idea.

“When Ed inquired about a purchase we thought we could donate a bus, one that was scheduled to be rotated out of service.

Dufour said the bus is a 1999 with 80,000 miles on it. With its diesel engine, “it can go a lot longer than buses with gas engines, he added.

“I thought it was very generous and unusual, said Eastman, who is now busy raising funds to cover the cost of shipping the bus from East Boston, Mass., to Miami, Fla., and then on to Haiti.

A church in Quincy, Mass., is donating food and 30,000 personal kits containing essentials to be shipped with the bus. “It will be a double blessing.

The bus should be on its way by late August. Those wishing to contribute to the shipping fund may make checks out to Partners With Haiti (write “bus fund in the memo line) and send it care of Ed Eastman, PO Box 1119, North Canaan, CT 06018.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
