At fundraiser, a song and dance accompany all auction items
SHARON — TriArts at the Sharon Playhouse, now in its 21st season, will hold a special spring fundraiser, Spotlight 2010, on Saturday, May 29, at the Salisbury School boathouse from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
The event will include a live and a silent auction as well as musical performances.
TriArts Executive Director Alice Bemand said there will be more than 40 items to choose from in the silent auction. The live auction will showcase nine special items, presented — and performed — by TriArts Artistic Director Michael Berkeley.
“Michael will be singing and performing an act that relates to every live item auctioned,†Bemand said.
Example: a one-week trip to Oahu, Hawaii, with a stay in a four-bedroom home, an estimated value of $8,500.
“Michael plans to sing a song from ‘South Pacific’ and he’ll have TriArts board members in grass skirts doing the hula,†Bemand said.
Another item up for bid: four tickets to a Yankees home game with seats behind home plate, an estimated value of $3,000.
“Michael will sing a song from ‘Damn Yankees’ before we auction that one off,’ Bemand said.
Other items up for bidding include: A painting by local artist Emily Buchanan, a dinner performance by Berkeley and 10 “divas,†an eight-day trip to Cancun, Mexico, a dinner by Alfred Portale of Gotham Bar and Grill, and tickets to see James Taylor and Carole King at Tanglewood.
Bemand would not reveal what other songs Berkeley will perform at the auction, but hinted that he would be singing some showstoppers for the event, which is the main fundraiser for TriArts.
“We have some high-quality performances at TriArts throughout the year, and for that we need funding,†Bemand said. “We bring in a group of professionals each year to work alongside our community performers and staff. TriArts always keeps the prices of tickets affordable and economical. Because of which, there is a gap between what we make from ticket sales and what we spend. We cannot survive on ticket sales alone.â€
Tickets for the auction are $100 per person. For more information and to purchase tickets, call 860-364-7469 ext. 100 or visit triarts.net.
