Pennies add up for fundraiser
WEBUTUCK — This year’s Pennies for Patients fundraiser paid off for Webutuck High School and Eugene Brooks Intermediate School participants, who used their common cents for a good cause.
The program has been run for the last two years by Webutuck’s guidance counsellor, Kristen Chadwick, and raises money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Some $416.20 was raised this year, with Anna Duffy’s Ag Science class, of only seven students, winning the top spot by contributing $100.41.
Fundraising kicked off with an assembly held by a representative from the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, explaining the diseases and the organization’s work to the students.
“I think it definitely brings teachers and students together,†Chadwick said. “It’s fun to do, and it’s competitive, which is always a good motivator. It’s much more successful than just putting jars out in a classroom!â€
Chadwick hauled the hefty amount of change to Salisbury Bank & Trust’s branch in Millerton, adding that the bank was a great help in sorting everything out and cutting a check to mail to the society.
Duffy’s class wins its choice of a breakfast or pizza party.
