Alternate routes to use during bridge work

SHARON — Starting in the last week of April, the bridge that connects Sharon and Amenia on Dutchess County Route 2 (the Leedsville Road) will be closed for repairs. The work is expected to continue until the end of summer.

First Selectman Bob Loucks is recommending that residents use West Woods Road No. 1 or West Woods Road No. 2 as alternative routes.

As for ambulances, Loucks said the town has negotiated with a property owner who will allow ambulance services to pass through their property, which is right near the bridge.

Fire trucks will use West Woods Road No. 1 as an alternate route.

“It’s a narrow road and any fire truck would need an escort to go along with it,” Loucks said. “The sight lines on the road are not good and it’s a dirt road, which is why they’re going to need an escort. We will be looking toward  the Dover and Amenia fire departments for any mutual aid that is needed.”

As for Sharon Center School students who might be impacted by the bridge closure, Sharon Center School Principal Karen Manning said the school is still making plans with the bus company.

She added that a footbridge may be constructed near the bridge so children can walk across.
