A week in the wild for Kellogg students

FALLS VILLAGE — Lee H. Kellogg school students in grades six and seven attended a week of Nature’s Classroom programs in Becket, Mass., Sept. 15 to 19.

During this four-day program, students developed teamwork skills and studied a variety of science and social studies topics. In the mornings, the two field groups hiked through woods and wetlands, learning about local wildlife and performing outdoor science experiments. (One of the group leaders was Erik Lindquist from Falls Village.)

In the afternoon, students attended classes in which they participated in team-building exercises, such as constructing a homemade rope bridge. In the egg drop class, they designed a container to safely transport an egg to the bottom of a steep drop-off. In other classes they explored concepts in physics, building a bouncing object to explore Newton’s laws, or studying pressure using a water rocket.

The sixth- and seventh-graders work together in the same classroom at Kellogg, so having this program early in the school year really helped them develop good teamwork. We’ve found in previous years that the positive effects of Nature’s Classroom tend to last throughout the school year.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
