George P. Attella

WINSTED — George P. Attella, 92, of Greenwoods Gardens Apartments, died Sept. 7, 2009, following a short illness.

Born in Winsted Feb. 7, 1917, he was a son of the late Mary (Bolus) and Peter Attella. He had lived here all of his life.

Prior to his retirement, he had worked for the state of Connecticut, Consumer Protection Department, Bureau of Weights and Measures and thereafter for the American Red Cross and John Wheatley Golf Club Maker of Farmington. He had attended local schools and was a proud graduate of The Gilbert School, class of 1936. He was an Army veteran of World War II, having served with Co. E, 169th Infantry, 43rd Division in the Pacific Theater. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, an avid golfer until the age of 90, a horse racing enthusiast who loved going to Saratoga and one-time trainer. He was very active in local politics and very knowledgeable about Winsted’s history.

Mr. Attella was a staunch Democrat and former chairman of the Democratic Town Committee.

His survivors include his children, Gail Woodley-Attella of New York City, George W. Attella, Lynn Attella and Myrna Attella and her companion, Mark A. Cannavo, all of Winsted; three grandchildren, Andrew Ouellette and his wife, Kim, of Torrington, Lindsay Ouellette of Philadelphia, and Chase Attella of California,; a great-grandson, Ryan George Ouellette; a niece, Ann Sears; two nephews, Joseph DelNero and John Gauger Jr.; and several great-nieces and nephews. He also leaves his second family, all of the wonderful staff at Cackleberries Restaurant, his friends at Greenwoods Gardens and his beloved cat, “Big Red,†aka 2 O’Clock in the Morning Red.

He was predeceased by a brother, Edward Attella; and three sisters, Josephine DelNero, Elizabeth Gauger and Helen Attella.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Sept. 11, 10:30 a.m. from Maloney Funeral Home to St. Joseph Church, Winsted, for the funeral liturgy at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Forest View Cemetery will full military honors. On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
