Harold H. Dowlin Jr.

NEW HARTFORD — Harold (Hal) H. Dowlin Jr., beloved father, brother, uncle and husband, died Aug. 26, 2009, in Brooksville, Fla. He was born Jan. 3, 1932 in Putney, Vt.

Mr. Dowlin served in the U.S. Army from 1950 to 1952. He served as an aide to General Dwight D. Eisenhower in Germany and England as part of Eisenhower’s honor guard and then served in the National Guard of Vermont and the United States Army Reserves from 1952 to 1956.

He came to Connecticut during the Great Flood of 1955 with the Army Corp of Engineers and remained here until moving to Florida in 1998. Mr. Dowling retired from the state of Connecticut after 30 years of service in the Department of Transportation. He was an active member of the VFW Honor Guard in Brooksville and a lifetime member of the American Legion in New Hartford.

Mr. Dowlin is survived by his second wife, Carol Day Dowlin; a daughter, Shirley Marie Dowlin-Mason and her husband, James, of Pleasant Valley; a stepdaughter, Audrey Renick of Terryville; two sisters, Katherine May Bradley of Waldorf, Md., and Virginia Dowlin Moore of North Walpole, N.H.; a brother-in-law, William Thomas of Winsted; and many nieces and nephews in Virginia, Maryland, New Hampshire, Vermont and North Carolina.

He was predeceased by his mother, Katherine Keenan Dowlin; and his father, Harold H. Dowlin, Sr.; his wife of 40 years, Florence Thomas Dowlin; and his sisters, Janet Dowlin Forehand and Evelyn Dowlin Fratto.

A Mass of Christian burial was be held Sept. 5, at Immaculate Conception Church, New Hartford. Burial was held at Immaculate Conception Cemetery, New Hartford, with full military honors.  Montano-Shea Funeral Home, New Hartford, has care of the arrangements. Water main cleaning in North Canaan

Tuning up two passions under one roof

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
