Amenia Monarchs come together for a strong season

AMENIA — The Amenia Monarchs, a team in the Tri-State Baseball League, took the field at Amenia’s Beekman Park last Sunday to face off against Connecticut’s Bristol team. They’re about three-quarters of the way through their season, but coach Tom Downey, who has steered the Monarchs since 1972, is happy about the way his team has shaped up this year.

“We’re starting to come together and hit the ball,†he said. Many of the players Downey has been coaching since Little League, so it would be safe to say that this is a close-knit team.

“They’re good ball players,†Downey said. “At this level, in their 20s and 30s, they play for the love of the game.â€

Despite the title, all of the teams in the league are from Connecticut and New York, although some of the players do hail from above the Massachusetts border.

As for their opponent, Bristol left Amenia with a long ride home Sunday, losing 14-5. For Amenia, Tom Moore was three for three, Matt Hosier tallied two hits, and Travis Hyatt was the winning pitcher, going six innings. The win brings the Monarch’s record to 5-4 for the season.

The Amenia Monarchs team has been in existence for over a century, and the Tri-State Baseball League is now up to 17 teams. The Monarchs play all their home games on the Doc Barlett field at Beekman Park; their next scheduled home game is Tuesday, July 7, versus Hyde Park. The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
