Housy boys tennis scores first win

FALLS VILLAGE — The Housatonic boys tennis team suffered three defeats last week but pulled off a win against Gilbert 5-0 Monday, April 27. Nonnewaug defeated Housatonic 5-0 at home Monday, April 20, and Northwestern defeated Housatonic 5-0 at Pinewoods Racquet Club Wednesday, April 22. On Friday, April 24, they fell to Wamogo, 2-3.

Nonnewaug swept all three singles matches without dropping a game by playing mistake-free, smart tennis.  Their doubles teams finished the shut-out before the rains came.  Housatonic looks to bounce back on Wednesday at Northwestern.

No. 1 singles:  Eric Wade (N) defeated Cameron Samson, 8-0.

No. 2 singles:  Brian Bucknam (N) defeated Jack Lenz, 8-0.

No. 3 singles:  Bryce Lawlor (N) defeated Tyler Scarpa, 8-0.

No. 1 doubles:  Ryan Davenport and Albert Phalen (N) defeated Jerad Lauzier and Matt Walker, 8-3.

No. 2 doubles:  Ivan Krayniy and Dave Mostroianni (N) defeated Daven Patel and A.J. Opgenorth, 8-1.

Even though Northwestern swept Housatonic 5-0, all five matches were very competitive.  The match of the day was No.1 singles.

Cameron Samson of Housatonic raced out to a 5-2 lead.  Conor Pickett remained calm and fought back by winning the next four games.  Cameron could have easily gotten discouraged about giving up a lead and lost the next two games and the match as well, but he hung tough and got himself to 7-7.  Conor broke serve to go up 8-7 and then held several match points that Cameron fought off.  Cameron had a couple of game points to bring the match to a tiebreak, but Conor served himself out of trouble and won the match 9-7.  The rematch in a few weeks should be equally as competitive and entertaining.

No. 1 singles:  Conor Pickett (N) defeated Cameron Samson, 9-7.

No. 2 singles:  Jake Zanderigo (N) defeated Jack Lenz, 8-5.

No. 3 singles:  Rob Hollis (N) defeated Tyler Scarpa, 8-3.

No. 1 doubles:  Tony Arnold and Paul Kurtz (N) defeated Jerad Lauzier and Matt Walker, 8-5.

No. 2 doubles:  Matt Dunlop and Ryan Rood (N) defeated Daven Patel and A.J. Opgenorth, 8-5.

Against Wamogo on Friday, Housatonic started off strong, winning No. 1 and No. 2 singles, but Wamogo swept the remaining three matches to secure the victory.  Cameron Samson of Housatonic won his first match of the year.  Samson and Brown were tied at 5-5 when Samson dug in and won the last three games for his first win.

No. 1 singles:  Cameron Samson (H) defeated Kevin Brown, 8-5.

No. 2 singles:  Jack Lenz (H) defeated Adam Webel, 8-6.

No. 3 singles:  Spencer Albano (W) defeated Tyler Scarpa, 8-5.

About growing up in Carmel, New York, Troutbeck’s executive chef Vincent Gilberti said he was fortunate to have a lot of family close by, and time together was always centered around food.

His grandparents in White Plains always made sure to have a supply of cured meats, olives, cheeses and crusty bread during their weekend visits. But it wasn’t until his family moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, when he was 16 that his passion for food really began. It was there that he joined the German Club, whose partnership with Johnson & Wales University first introduced him to cooking.
