Economic Development Committee formed

SHARON — The Board of Selectmen approved the formation of an Economic Development Committee at a meeting on Tuesday, April 14, at Town Hall.

“The committee will analyze the town’s economic situation, First Selectman Malcolm Brown said after the meeting. “We want them to interview merchants and people involved in our local area and gather opinions from them to formulate a plan, and try to assist them.

In this rough economy, Brown said, the town’s businesses need help more than ever. In the past few months, several have closed or left town, including Caffe Tazza, Trotta’s market, Byzance clothing store and Clothes and Collectibles.

“It’s some really tough times in Sharon, Brown said.

A full mission statement has not been developed for the committee yet, but during the meeting a draft mission statement was presented that included the following goals: To attract businesses that provides jobs with living wages and benefits, to keep the tax base low through business expansion and to ensure a diverse group of businesses comes to Sharon to prevent the impact that a large single employer might have if it went out of business.

The selectmen have named Lea Davies, Lynn Humeston, Mary Robertson and Linda Clark to the committee.

Brown has estimated that there are currently 35 businesses in town, not counting any at-home or Internet businesses.

No meetings for the committee have yet been scheduled.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
