Web Gallery comes to life in West Cornwall

CORNWALL — Just shy of a year from its opening, the Northern Exposure Photographic Gallery will close. Its last show is hanging through Feb. 15.

The cooperative venture found difficulties in attracting visitors and in staffing the space on a regular basis (the coop  members volunteered their time). There is some talk of the gallery reopening in Kent.

Bianca Griggs is the owner of the building (and The Wish House shop, which is on the main floor). She loves the idea of having a gallery in the space below. When it was renovated last year for just that purpose, she felt the space lent itself beautifully to its new use.

“West Cornwall just has to have a gallery,†said Griggs, who keeps an analytic eye on the business climate. “We could use more than one. This is where the tourists come. There have to be things for them to do.â€

That said, she has found a new tenant: Lady Audrey’s Gallery. Cornwall resident Deborah Kendig will bring her online gallery to life, with plans to open by Memorial Day weekend.

Don’t head for the Web site expecting to see traditional landscapes and still lifes. This is quirky space with many experimental and offbeat works.

The name of the gallery belongs, actually, to one of the owner’s collie dogs. Kendig has a fun sense of humor, and she just liked the way the name sounded.

Lady Audrey is, by the way, a pooch who does seem to consider herself a member of the nobility. She has inspired Kendig to serve tea outside her gallery door, accompanied by cakes and chocolates prepared by two friends, who are experts at concocting the latter.

As for the art, Kendig doesn’t look for a particular style, she looks only for talent. The site offers an eclectic mix from established and emerging artists.

“I want people to come and not be intimidated,†Kendig said. “I know some people get dragged to a gallery, so I want there to be something for everyone.â€

The online gallery she started about three years ago includes an atelier section, or attic treasure shop, with antiques and collectibles. “I’m going to have some of those items right inside the door. Hopefully it will give everyone something to enjoy.â€

For a sneak peak, artwork from Lady Audrey’s Gallery is currently exhibited (and for sale) at the Cornwall Inn. To learn more about what’s in store at the site, go to ladyaudreysgallery.com.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
