Holiday lights up town and hamlet

AMENIA — Residents braved freezing winds Sunday (and the off-chance that Santa might put them on his naughty list)  as they took part in the town’s annual Holiday of Lights.

The United Presbyterian Church held a free soup and sandwich luncheon from noon to 2 p.m. Free lessons in making old-fashioned tree ornaments and face painting were offered.

At the Amenia Free Library, Santa swung by on a decorated firetruck. He and his elves greeted children and gave out snacks, compliments of the library’s board and staff.

“We’ve been doing this for 18 years, head librarian Miriam Devine said. “It started with a handful of people, and this year we easily had 200 people.

Eighteen years ago the library’s open house was available for its patrons. According to Devine and several members of the board, Santa was got caught up in the mix, and sooner or later the town became involved as well.

This year’s books were donated to the library from Kildonan School, and the Amenia Lions Club brought a digital camera and printer for the library to use for Santa’s pictures.

Across the street at Havens Real Estate, the Amenia Historical Society and Indian Rock Schoolhouse Association held a joint fundraiser with free refreshments. John Quinn autographed copies of his book, “Memories of a Country Schoolhouse, which are available for sale at Oblong Books & Music in Millerton, Merritt Books in Millbrook, and Havens Real Estate in Amenia.

At 4:30 p.m., everyone gathered at Fountain Square, where various raffle winners were announced by town Councilwoman Vicki Doyle, carols were sung, and the Amenia Citizen of the Year Award was given to former town Supervisor Arlene Iuliano.

Meanwhile, in Wassaic, similar festivities were going on. Children lined up at the firehouse to get their pictures taken with Santa, and to get a free gift. There were also raffles and prizes were given out.

A short while later, holiday revelers gathered in the hamlet center where the Christmas tree was lighted and holiday songs were sung. Also at the event, Nancy Luther was honored as Wassaic Citizen of the Year.

Just as it was in Wassaic, the lights on the Amenia Christmas tree that had been decorated during the day were turned on, and everyone sang carols as the sun set and this year’s Holiday of Lights concluded.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
