Judge OKs write-ins for Riiska in 63rd District

William O. Riiska of Norfolk, an attorney with an office in Lakeville, will be a write-in candidate in the Nov. 4 election for state representative for the 63rd District.

Just before noon on Tuesday, Oct. 28, Riiska said “lawyers working for the House Democrats and me have met with lawyers for the attorney general and the judge and reached an agreement that my registration will be certified  and orders will go out that ballots for me should be counted.â€

Riiska is stepping into the spot vacated by George Wilber, who resigned last week as state representative for the 63rd District, in the wake of revelations that he had paid a woman $100,000 after she accused  him of sexually abusing her many years ago.

Wilber also stepped down as a candidate in the Nov. 4 election.

Republican John Rigby was temporarily unopposed for the seat; he will now face off against Riiska, a Democrat.

Last Tuesday, Riiska had faxed the paperwork for his write-in candidacy to the office of the secretary of the state at around 4 p.m. He was then informed that a fax was not acceptable, the papers had to be delivered in person before the end of that day.

Riiska brought the matter to court and the ruling was made Tuesday, eight days before the election.

The Lakeville Journal has prepared a candidate information page (see pages A10 and A11) in advance of the election. Riiska’s profile is included.

A native of Winsted, where he had a law office until 2002, Riiska is vice chairman of the Norfolk Planning and Zoning Commission and chairman of the Government Relations Committee of the Northwest Connecticut Chamber of Commerce. He comes from a family that has shown a commitment to public service; his father, William T. Riiska, served in “nearly every elected office in Winsted in his time, Riiska said.

The 56-year-old attorney said he has had “other opportunities to run for state office that I wasn’t able to pursue, given family circumstances. Now I am able to serve, and this opportunity arose. It appears I have enough support, which was a prerequisite to actually going through with this.

Riiska has also managed campaigns for other candidates in the past.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
