Fall Begins With Bach, Vivaldi and Mahler


The Music Scene has shifted into fall.

And


Aston Magnawill return to St. James Church in Great Barrington, MA, on Saturday, Oct. 27, at 6 p.m., with the first of three programs featuring music by J.S. Bach and his contemporaries to explore music of the "High Baroque." That means sonatas and trios by George Frideric Handel, Georg Philip Telemann and Dietrich Buxtehude, in addition to music by Bach, will be performed by violinist Daniel Stepner, Aston Magna’s artistic director; Gonzalo Ruiz, baroque oboe; Laura Jeppersen, viola da gamba; and John Gibbons, harpsichord.

At Bard College’s Olin Hall in Red Hook, NY, the

Hungarian Brass Quintetwill appear Thursday, Oct. 11 at 9 p.m. The concert is free and open to the public. Call 845-758-7425 for details.

Close Encounters With Music


returns on Oct. 20, at 6 p.m., for its 16th season in Great Barrington, MA, at the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center. The program is titled "Vivaldi for All Seasons." Participating artists are Lionel Party, harpsichord; Jonathan Karen and Kordella Hagmann, violins; Yehuda Hanani and Katya Janpoladyan, cellos; Kevin Cobb and Alexander White, trumpets; Lucille Beer, mezzo-soprano, and the Camerata San Marco. On Oct. 20 at 8 p.m., at Kiggins Hall of the Emma Willard School in Troy, NY, the


American Chamber Playerswith Miles Hoffman, violist and artistic director, will open a six-concert season.

 

Hoffman is known for his many commentaries on PBS and will give a preconcert talk at 7 p.m. The program includes: the Trio for Flute, Violin and Piano, by Madeleine Dring, dating from 1968; the Quartet in A-Minor for Piano and Strings, by Mahler; and the Quartet No. 1 in G-Minor for Piano and Strings, by Brahms (Op. 25).

On Tuesday, April 9, The Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie was the setting for a talk between Elizabeth Lesser and Anne Lamott, with the focus on Lamott’s newest book, “Somehow: Thoughts on Love.”

A best-selling novelist, Lamott shared her thoughts about the book, about life’s learning experiences, as well as laughs with the audience. Lesser, an author and co-founder of the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, interviewed Lamott in a conversation-like setting that allowed watchers to feel as if they were chatting with her over a coffee table.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
