William G. Aloan

MILLERTON — William G. Aloan, 88, died Sept. 24, 2007, at Noble Horizons in Salisbury.

He was born on May 27, 1919, in Evans Mills, N.Y., the son of Alice F. (Barker) and Wilson W. Aloan. He graduated from high school in Evans Mills in 1936. On June 11, 1942, he married the former Kathleen E. Thompson, who survives in Millerton.

Mr. Aloan served for two years in the 8th Division of the 28th Infantry and also for two years with the 862 Squadron Bomb Group in the Army Air Force.

He moved to Millerton from Greenwich, N.Y., in 1963 and eventually retired as the manager of the Millerton Agway in 1981, after 43 years of service.

He served the village of Millerton as trustee and also as mayor.

He was a member of the Millerton Methodist Church, the Millerton Lions Club, Pisgah Lodge 720, F&AM of Evans Mills, the American Legion of Philadelphia, N.Y., the 493 Bomb Group (H) National Memorial Assoc., and the Eighth Air Force National Historical Society.

During his tour with the military he was awarded the American Service Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Medal, four Bronze Stars for air offenses in Europe, Normandy, southern France and Germany, and the Air Medal with four bronze oak leaf clusters.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Aloan is survived by one son, Stephen Aloan and his wife, Joy, of Troy, N.Y.; two daughters, Karen Petteys and her husband, James, of Roy, Utah, and Brenda DeWitt and her husband, Alan, of Millerton; a brother, Wilson, of Lansdale, Pa.; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be celebrated at the Valentine Funeral Home in Millerton on Thursday, Sept. 27 at 11 a.m. Interment will be private.

Contributions in Mr. Aloan’s memory may be sent to the Millerton Methodist Church or the Millerton Fire Department.
