Remembering a Pioneer

There will be two celebratory evenings at the Fisher Center, Bard College, honoring John Cage:

The Merce Cunningham Musicians and Nexus will bring back “Four 3†(1991) and Dance Music for Elfrid Ide (1940), in addition to the world premiere of “For John,†(2007) Thursday, Sept. 27, at 8 p.m.

“Lecture for the Weather,†a multimedia stage work composed by Cage and commissioned by the Canadian Broadcasting Co. in 1975, can be heard on Friday, Sept. 28, at 8 p.m., with participating artists John Ashberry, poet, Leon Botstein, president of Bard College, Merce Cunningham, dancer and choreographer, and many others, including members of the Bard Conservatory Orchestra.

Both concerts will honor Cage and the establishment of The John Cage Trust at Bard College.

Also, at the Sosnoff Theater on Sunday, Sept. 23, at 3 p.m. the Conservatory Chamber Orchestra conducted by Guillermo Figueroa will perform music by Mendelssohn, Mozart and Tchaikovsky, with violinist Weigang Li of the Shanghai String Quartet as soloist.

Seating is on a first-come, first-seated basis. Admission is free of charge.

Members of the Juilliard String Quartet — Joel Smirnoff and Ronald Cooper, violins; Samuel Roades, viola and Joel Krosnick, cello — will be the guests at the fourth Sunday afternoon concert this season at South Mountain, off Route 20, Pittsfield, MA, Sept. 30 at 3 p.m. The group will offer a program to include the String Quartet in E-minor by Verdi, (Op. 68), the String Quartet, No. 2 (1960) by Elliot Carter and Beethoven’s Quartet in C Major, Op. 59, No. 3. The last of the six programs at Tannery Pond Concerts 2007 takes place at 8 p.m. on Sept. 29. Participating artists will be Kurt Nikkanen, violin; Daniel Gaisford, cello; and Maria Asterladou and Christian Steiner, piano.

Music by George Frideric Handel, Zoltan Kodaly, Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel will be on the program.

The first benefit of the 2007-08 season, for Renaissance Musical Arts, Ltd., will introduce “wunderkind†Conrad Tao, a 14-year-old pianist, violinist and composer, who will make his debut at the Colonie Country Club on Friday, Sept. 28, at 8 p.m.

We have not as yet heard Tao in any of the three capacities in which he excels, and we are certainly eager to hear and meet him.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
