Republican chair denies supporting Chamberlin's Democrat endorsements

AMENIA — Dutchess County Republican Chairwoman Corinne Weber denies she supports the decision of Amenia town Republican Committee Chairman Michael Chamberlin and the local committee to endorse Democratic candidates Vicki Doyle and Joel Pelkey for Town Board, instead of Republican candidates Evelyn O’Connell and Norm Cayea.

In a previous article in The Millerton News, Chamberlin, who is also a candidate for Town Board, said he talked with Weber and that she was OK with the decision.

However, Weber later said that she was misled by Chamberlin.

“He spoke to me and told me that he did not have any Republican candidates, Weber said. “I never agreed with him to endorse a Democrat. The number one priority of my job is to get Republicans elected, so I definitely do not agree with what he has done.

Chamberlin, however, insisted Weber was OK with the endorsement.

“She told me that she had no problem, Chamberlin said. “It was pretty clear to me that Corrine did not think this was the best way to go, but she said she had no problem. She said to me that this was a local issue and not a county issue, and that she wanted to keep out of it.

“Her feelings may have hardened our change because she might have gotten complaints, he said. “She originally said this was all a local matter.

Doyle said she respects Weber’s opinion, but that she is not doing anything wrong by being cross-endorsed.

“The Democrats interviewed me and I was allowed to run on their ticket, and the same thing happened with the Republicans, Doyle said. “It’s the local committee that makes the decisions. Other opinions are wonderful, but in reality we have a wonderful local Republican Committee who works very hard and has good standing citizens.

Councilman and candidate Wayne Euvrard, who previously criticized Chamberlin and the committee for the decision, said he is glad Weber agrees with him.

“If you look at [Chamberlin’s] advertisements, you will see that he is supporting more Democrats than Republicans, Euvrard said. “I sent her an e-mail and told her that we have two Republican candidates already and we should not cross endorse.

He said Chamberlin is splitting the town and hurting the Republican party with his actions.

“In general, you already have great people in this town, but somehow we just can’t work together, he said. “Unfortunately, Amenia has a reputation. If you talk to people in the county, they say that you have the Democrats, you have the Republicans, and then you have Amenia. Somehow, I think Mr. Chamberlin has split the town even more.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
