Pink's NFL Picks

Labor Day has come and gone and the football season is now upon us. Though baseball is still going on, the Fed-Ex Cup in golf is yet to be decided and the Chase for the Nextel Cup is still on tap, for many fans its all about the NFL.

The league has suffered through a tough offseason with some severe off-field shenanigans by some players, but the games will go on and the indiscretions will eventually be forgotten.

As always, there will be plenty of local interest in the Giants, Patriots and Jets but football’s popularity is such that fans don’t always root for the local team. Instead, different franchises enjoy a wide fan base for any number of reasons. If you took a survey of local fans and asked them who their favorite team was you’re liable to hear the Cowboys, Redskins, 49ers, Packers, Steelers, Colts or Dolphins just as often as the above mentioned. No other sport enjoys such support for teams located out of the immediate area.

There are some excellent games on tap in the season openers and this is how I see them playing out:

Thursday, Sept. 6

New Orleans at Indianapolis — Nothing like a blockbuster to start the season. The Super Bowl Champion Colts versus what became America’s team, the New Orleans Saints. Wow, I must be crazy but I think the Saints will come out on fire behind Drew Brees and Reggie Bush and upset the Colts, 31-27.

Sunday, Sept. 9

Kansas City at Houston — I don’t think either team is playoff-bound but it might just be that the Texans are headed in the right direction while the Chiefs could very well falter. I’m sticking with the Texans in this one, 17-14.

Denver at Buffalo — As always there are high expectations in Denver but there are plenty of question marks as the Broncos head into the season. As for the Bills, they always seem to find a way to compete and they have enough talent to do so. I like the Bills here, 24-17.

Pittsburgh at Cleveland — The Browns have got to be better than in previous years but the Steelers are a tough opener because of their defense. I think both teams are better than what most people think but I’m forced to make a heart pick here: Steelers, 20-10.

Tennessee at Jacksonville — There are plenty of fans out there pulling for quarterback Vince Young to carry the Titans to the promised land. It won’t happen this year or this week. I like the Jags in this one, 21-13.

Carolina at St. Louis — I think Carolina coach John Fox is in trouble. This team has seemed to lose its edge since its Super Bowl appearance two years ago. On the other side of the ball, I think the Rams offense is good enough to keep St. Louis competitive with anyone, especially at home. I like the Rams as my Pick of the Week, 34-21.

Philadelphia at Green Bay — This is a pretty good matchup that the Eagles should be pretty good and the Packers should improve over last year. I’m not sold on either team but something tells me the Packers will find a way to prevail in this one. I’ll take Green Bay 24-21.

Atlanta at Minnesota — Here’s hoping the Falcons overcome what’s-his-name’s problems and somehow enjoy a productive year. As for the Vikings, there’s hope on the horizon but not this season. Here’s another heart pick. I’ll take the Falcons, 17-14.

Miami at Washington — Here are two teams that have had a very hard time returning to the upper echelon of the league. Unfortunately for both, I don’t see it happening this year. I flipped a coin and it came up Redskins, 13-10 in a sleeper.

New England at New York Jets — Yes, the Patriots may very well be the best team out there, but the best way to beat such a veteran team is to get them early. With that said, the Jets are young and hungry and should keep it close. I’ll go with New England, 21-17.

Tampa Bay at Seattle — Here is another coach, Jon Gruden, who may be running out of time. The Bucs have been a non-factor since their Super Bowl win and that has to change. Seattle is always tough at home so I’m going to stick with the Seahawks, 31-14.

Chicago at San Diego — It’s possible this game could be a preview of the Super Bowl. The Bears will play tough but L.T. and company will prevail in this one. I like the Chargers in this one, 27-17.

Detroit at Oakland — I know it’s the first week of the season but this is a yard work game. I must admit I’m somewhat of a undeclared fan of the Lions but it’s hard to root for them with GM Matt Millen still at the helm. I’ll go with them anyway, Lions, 21-20.

New York Giants at Dallas – This could be a real tough opener for the Giants. I’m still not convinced head coach Tom Coughlin is the right man for the job in New York. I’m not a Dallas fan but I do like their new coach, Wade Phillips. With that said, the Giants will keep it close but Dallas will take this one, 27-24.

Monday, Sept. 10

Baltimore at Cincinnati — I am not capable of rooting for the Ravens and I’m happy to say that I honestly like the Bengals in this match up. Cincinnati wins big in this one, 27-13.

Arizona at San Francisco – These are two teams on the way up. Arizona is making strides and the 49ers showed everyone last year that they are capable of big things. I hope they both do well but at this stage the Niners get the nod. I like San Francisco, 21-14.

Reading between the lines in historic samplers

Alexandra Peter's collection of historic samplers includes items from the family of "The House of the Seven Gables" author Nathaniel Hawthorne.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
