Mexican delights

NORTH CANAAN — Long before he moved here from Mexico nine years ago, Mario Ramirez owned his own restaurant. Now that he is back in the restaurant business, with the newly opened Mexi-Canaan on Railroad Street, he calls it a dream come true.

He and his wife, Esperanza Nunez, and her brother, Julio Nunez, re-opened last week what was most recently a restaurant called La Heradura. New paint outside and inside have brought a taste of the vibrant colors of their native Mexico. The family says they want people to come and dine in and enjoy the atmosphere they have created.

"The last time, they had a deli and groceries. It was more of a take-out place," Ramirez said. "We want to be a real restaurant and welcome everyone."

For now, Mexi-Canaan will serve dinner Tuesday through Sunday. It will also be open for lunch on Sunday.

While Julio is working full time at the restaurant, Mario and Esperanza, who live in Millerton, are keeping their jobs at The White Hart Inn in Salisbury. He is a cook. She works the front desk and does housekeeping overnight.

The plan, of course, is to become successful enough at the restaurant to quit their day, and night, jobs.

Reservations are not necessary, but are recommended for large parties. Mexi-Canaan can be reached at 860-824-3401.
