Pine Meadow Throws Roast For Stroke Victim

NEW HARTFORD — Community residents rallied at a pig roast on Sunday, Aug. 25, to support a longtime town highway department employee and member of the Pine Meadow Fire Department, Keith Dzis.

Dzis, 47, remains in critical condition at Hartford Hospital following a severe stroke in mid-July. In an effort to help the family, the Pine Meadow Volunteer Fire Department organized the benefit dinner at its fire headquarters. According to Pine Meadow Fire Chief Walter Wabrek, Dzis has been a fire fighter for many years.

“At the age of 17, he joined the Avon Fire Department as a junior. When he moved to New Hartford about 18 years ago he joined New Hartford. Then he moved to Pine Meadow and joined our fire department, said Wabrek.

Dzis is a highly respected officer of the Pine Meadow Fire Department, currently holding the position as lieutenant. “There aren’t too many other people I would want behind me or in front of me [at a fire], said Wabrek. “Hopefully he will be able to come back, if only to give us a hard time.

Overjoyed at the outpouring of community support seen at the fundraiser, Wabrek is very appreciative to all who helped. “The fire department would like to express their thanks to the community and other fire departments in the area. We had a wonderful turnout. I have never seen the firehouse so full of people, said Wabrek.

He estimates that more than 300 people attended the roast and many others who couldn’t make it that afternoon bought tickets. By the end of the fundraiser nearly all the food was gone.

“We had about 10 pounds of pork left. The bones were picked pretty well clean, said Wabrek. “I don’t know what we would have done if everyone had shown up.

Originally, a pig roast was planned as the fire department’s annual fundraiser. When word was received of Dzis condition, the chief immediately called the members and asked if they would be willing to hold the fundraiser to help the Dzis family. The fire department wanted to help the family with all of their needs.

“We’re proud of how much we took in, said Wabrek, but mentioned that more donations will gladly be accepted.

For those wishing to send a donation, checks can be made out to: Pine Meadow Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 32, Pine Meadow, CT 06061, annotated“For Lt. Keith Dzis.

Donations may also be brought to the first selectman’s office of the New Hartford Town Hall.

“Some people don’t like to give cash, said Christine Hayward, assistant to the first selectman. “I’ll take gift cards to anywhere like Wal-Mart, Marandino’s, even Kohl’s, for people who want to help with clothes.

“We are very grateful for all who donated their time and money. We are really proud of the community, said Wabrek.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
