Izikson joins The Millerton News

MILLERTON — This week, Shaw Israel Izikson joins the paper as a staff reporter.

Born on Sept. 1, 1973, in Baltimore, Md., he has been a reporter, editor, Web site designer, graphic designer and an award-winning filmmaker in his diverse career.

Raised in both Baltimore and Maine, Izikson graduated from Marlboro College in Marlboro, Vt., with a history, cinematography and sociology degree in 1998. His senior plan on the history of the college can be viewed at www.marlborocollege.com.

In 1999 he was awarded The American Motion Picture Society Stewart Dabbs Memorial Award for “Most Creative Short Film†for his film, “Quad,†which can be viewed on YouTube at www.youtube.com/watch?v=7c6_a6KPAtw.

His first journalism job after college was freelance work for The Irregular in Carrabassett Valley, Maine, and The Sun-Journal in Farmington, Maine.

He moved to Winsted, Conn., in 2001, where he served as the editor-in-chief for the citizen journalism publication The Voice.

After The Voice folded in 2004, Izikson served as a reporter for The North Adams Transcript in North Adams, Mass.

Izikson loves working as a journalist because he has always believed in the power of the press, and he has always believed in the power of people — that journalism should not be about an endless series of press releases and manufactured sensationalistic content about Anna Nicole Smith and Paris Hilton.

He thinks that everyone has a story to tell, and he’s more than willing to give an ear to listen to those stories.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
