100 years ago — June 1907

SALISBURY — Mrs. Frank Pettee and son Frank of Bisbee, Ariz., are guests at Mayflower Farm.

CANAAN — Frank Miller of Clayton has bought from George M. Burr, executor of the estate of Scebelia H. Sheldon, about 155 acres of land near Clayton. George W. Greene has purchased a portion of the land bought by Mr. Miller.

SHARON — Robert Dakin went over to Pine Plains Monday to go trout fishing; he had the good luck to catch 45.

50 years ago — June 1957

SALISBURY — The twin sons of Mr. and Mrs. William B. Barnett, John and Bill, celebrated their 18th birthdays on May 20, and last Friday they marked the event by registering for Selective Service.

SHARON — Miss Florence Elizabeth Pedersen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hans Pedersen, received two awards, one for being the Best All Around Nurse and one for the Most Outstanding Bedside Nurse, on May 23. Miss Pedersen was given the awards at commencement exercises of the Roxborough School of Nursing, Memorial Hospital, in Philadelphia, Pa.

CANAAN — Robert Gordon has been on vacation from his position as manager of the local division of the Connecticut Power Company.

25 years ago — June 1982

You often read complaints about motorists leaving the scene of an accident, but rarely about a horse.

One of those rare moments occurred May 28 on U.S. 44 in Canaan. According to State Police, a car driven by Kevin B. Ferrell of New York City was headed westbound when a horse struck it on the right side.

Damage to the car was moderate. The horse left the scene.

Nancy Tier of Lakeville was shown on the Saturday evening Channel 3 news in connection with her appearance at the aviation museum at Bradley International Airport earlier that day. Mrs. Tier, one of the first woman aviators in the country, spoke about Amelia Earhart at a luncheon marking the 50th anniversary of Earhart’s solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean.

NORFOLK — Robert J. Pallone, 69, of Perkins St. passed away April 12, 2024, at St. Vincent Medical Center. He was a loving, eccentric CPA. He was kind and compassionate. If you ever needed anything, Bob would be right there. He touched many lives and even saved one.

Bob was born Feb. 5, 1955 in Torrington, the son of the late Joesph and Elizabeth Pallone.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
