Town blooms with garden club sale

PINE PLAINS — The Pine Plain Garden Club held a successful plant sale last Saturday on a parcel off Church Street.

The club’s stock was almost sold out by 11 a.m. (the sale started at 9 a.m. and was scheduled to end three hours later).

"It’s been good, very busy," said Joan Franzone, a member of the club.

The sale, which mainly focused on perennials, was held on the property of Janet Adams, a former member of the club who recently passed away at the age of 94.

According to Carol Adams, Janet’s daughter, the soil in her mother’s garden had been tilled and cultivated since the end of World War II.

This made it easy for club members to grow perennials for the sale, as well as other events.

"It’s all about the soil," Adams said. "Everything went into that soil."

Shook said the club raised "slightly over" $1,000 with the sale.

The money, Franzone said, will be placed into the club’s treasury.

It’s doled out "judiciously," she said, to offer scholarships to Stissing Mountain High School students on their way to college and to beautify the town.

Every year, the club decorates the Pine Plains Post Office, plants pots around the town center and helps make Pine Plains beautiful during the holidays.

"We put our own special touch on the town," Franzone said.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
