A little training goes a long way

NORTH EAST — Members of the Planning Board and the Zoning Board of Appeals will soon have to get four more hours of training to keep their volunteer seats, thanks to a resolution passed unanimously by the Town Board April 12.

The training will be from the Planning Federation and it will be mandatory.

"In the past, there’s been a concern for people’s training," town Supervisor Dave Sherman said. "What they have here is four hours, it’s very minimum ... and it should be very good."

The training is available through online courses and live lectures. The planning and zoning board chairmen will keep logs of member training attendance.

Planning Board Chairman Henry Klimowicz said he thought the practice was a good one to institute.

"It’s a little toothless, but it’s a good statement and it’s a very good idea," he said, adding that perhaps board members could bring a voucher of sorts to the boards’ clerk and then have them verified by the Town Board. "We don’t want to end up with a board member who is coming up for a new term and is scrambling to get training."

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
