George S. Bushnell


SALISBURY — George S. Bushnell, 81, of 17 Cobble Road, formerly of 2 Hammertown Road, died Saturday night at Noble Horizons in Salisbury. He was the husband of the late Delores (Fitting) Bushnell.

Mr. Bushnell was born Dec. 8, 1925, on the family farm in Salisbury, a son of the late Hazel (Brown) and George William Bushnell.

Mr. Bushnell was a plumbing and heating and electrical contractor. He owned his own company and worked throughout the Northwest Corner. He was a member of the Salisbury Congregational Church and served on the Board of Deacons of the church. He was also a member of the Montgomery Masonic Lodge #13 in Lakeville, where he had last served as secretary of the lodge.

Mr. Bushnell was active in the town of Salisbury, where he volunteered as a member of the Lakeville Hose Company and the Democratic Town Committee. He also served as a selectman for over 13 years.

He answered the call of his country in World War II, serving as a private in the U.S. Army in the ETO. After returning from the war, he joined both the Lakeville VFW Post and the Salisbury American Legion Post, where he held the position of secretary.

The organizer of the Salisbury Memorial Day Parade for many years, Mr. Bushnell also honored the town’s fallen heroes by seeing to it that there were new flags on their graves every Memorial Day.

He is survived by his two daughters, Linda Bushnell and Patricia Stevens, both of Salisbury; his son, Frederick Bushnell of Cornwall; his sister, Adele Morey of North Canaan; his four brothers, Ralph of Florida, Harold and Robert, both of New York, and Louis of North Canaan; and his four grandchildren, Eric Stevens of Boston, Mass., Hillary Stevens of Florida, Cole Bushnell of North Canaan and Nicholas Bushnell of Cornwall.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 21, at 10 a.m. in the Salisbury Congregational Church on Main Street. Burial will follow in Salisbury Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Newkirk-Palmer Funeral Home, 118 Main St., North Canaan.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
