Verizon hopes to boost reception in town with array

PINE PLAINS — The Planning Board April 11 held a public hearing regarding plans by Verizon Wireless to attach an antenna array to an existing town Cellular One tower.

Representing Verizon was Scott Olson, an attorney with Cooper, Erving & Savage of Albany, who said that if the array is approved, reception in the area could be significantly boosted.

A storage shed must be installed on the property, which borders Myrtle Avenue.

The array will be located 140 feet up the tower, which is 180 feet tall, so viewsheds in town won’t be adversely affected, he said.

Rosemary Lyons, a Pine Plains resident and the only member of the audience to speak, said other telecommunications companies will most likely want to attach their arrays to the tower, too, which means more sheds.

"What happens when the next guy comes along?" she asked. "Can you share a shed?"

"I’ll have to leave that to the next applicant," Olson answered.

There’s ample space on the site for more sheds, said Ray Jurkowski, town engineer.

"And sheds are always required," added Attorney to the Town Warren Replansky.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
