Mildred Dana Whitney

SHARON — Mildred Dana Whitney, 97, died March 31, 2007. She was the widow of Sumner Whitney, who died in December 2000.

She was born Aug. 24, 1909, in Presque Isle, Maine, a daughter of Lillian and Frank Hilt. She was a graduate of both the Normal School, Presque Isle, in 1929 and of the University of Maine, Orono, where she received her B.S. in 1960. She married Sumner Whitney in Presque Isle on June 15, 1941.

Mrs. Whitney both taught elementary school and managed restaurants throughout her life. She taught in Aroostook County and also ran Whitney’s Tea Room, Presque Isle. She taught at Sharon Central School for 20 years before moving back to Maine with her husband and opening Rock Oven’s Restaurant, Bailey Island, and teaching at Orr’s Island Elementary School with her husband for several years.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Mildreth Andrews Schiff; three brothers, Rodney Hilt, Charles Hilt and Granville Hilt; and a sister, Marjory Vizza.

Survivors include three daughters, Lil Heyda and her husband, Bill, of Lisbon Falls, Charlene Whitney of New York, Georgene Schuster and her husband, Bob, of St. Croix, V.I.; a son, John Whitney and his wife, Flo Hazen, of Rhode Island.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
