Michael Francis Gomez

LAKEVILLE — Michael Francis Gomez, 53, of 328 Wells Hill Road, died at home Monday afternoon surrounded by family and his dog, Flip, after a long illness and a valiant fight.

Mr. Gomez was born at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington on Feb. 20, 1954, son of Patricia (Pattengell) and Francis J. Gomez. He moved from Cornwall Bridge to Lakeville with his family in 1955, and grew up on the family farm on Wells Hill.

He graduated from Housatonic Valley Regional High School in 1972. "Iron Mike," as he was known among his friends, spent 1976 to 1982 in Arizona before returning to Lakeville. He was well known as a master mechanic and computer genius.

He was a no frills, full-of-conviction, no-nonsense kind of guy who loved tinkering, the outdoors, his horse, Chief, his motorcycle, and his better half, Barbara Ann Hardy.

In addition to his parents and Barbara, he is survived by his paternal grandmother, Florence Gomez of Cornwall Bridge; six siblings, Susan Vreeland, Sandra Gomez, Mark Gomez, Patti Majesky of Ansonia, Anne Upson, Steven Gomez and their spouses, all of Lakeville; and his nieces and nephews of whom he was most proud.

His gift to all of us is the reminder of the fleeting, fragile nature of life, and that the only truly important thing is the people you love and the relationships you have.

A service to honor his life will be held at the Lakeville United Methodist Church, 319 Main St., on Friday, March 9, at 4 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Salisbury Visiting Nurse Association, Hospice Division, Salisbury, CT 06068; or the HVRHS Robotics Program, Falls Village, CT 06031.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
