Aglet To Present 'Sylvia' At the Bok Gallery

SHARON, CT — The newly created Aglet Theatre Company will present A. R. Gurney’s whimsical and insightful comedy "Sylvia." Vincent Canby of The New York Times said, "Dramatic literature is stuffed with memorable love scenes. But none is as immediately delicious and dizzy as the one that begins the redeeming affair in A. R. Gurney’s... ‘Sylvia.’ Not since ‘Abie’s Irish Rose’ has there been a play as critic-proof as ‘Sylvia,’ at least for anyone who has ever owned a dog, loved a dog, wanted to wring a dog’s neck or wished the dog would take a long weekend."

"Sylvia" is a delightful play that examines love, marriage and friendship. Kate and Greg are new empty-nesters whose lives are thrown into a tizzy by the arrival of a spunky stray dog, Sylvia. This multi-layered work begins as a deceptively simple comedy when Greg (Andrew Joffe) brings Sylvia (Vashti Poor) home to the highly chagrined Kate (Deann Halper). Greg and Sylvia meet Tom (a park-bench philosopher), Phyllis (Kate’s old college roommate) and Leslie (a marriage counselor), all played by Natalia Shea, who add fuel to the evolving conflicts. In the midst of hilarious and touching dilemmas, the three characters learn to compromise and to trust each other.

"Sylvia" will be presented at the TriArts’ Bok Gallery at the Sharon Playhouse, March 16 and 17 at 8 p.m., and March 18 at 2 p.m. For tickets, call 860-364-SHOW ext. 100.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
