Alexander D. Bonak


ASHLEY FALLS — Alexander D. Bonak, 85, of Clayton Road, died January 22, 2007, at Fairview Hospital in Great Barrington. He was the husband for 54 years of Lavinia "Lee" (Duncan) Bonak.

Born in Stockbridge, Mass., on March 27, 1921, he was the son Anna (Olinda) and Stephen Banach. He attended local schools and graduated from the former Williams High School in Stockbridge.

A veteran of World War II, he served with the U.S. Navy and was a member of the Adams Budz VFW Post in Housatonic.

Mr. Bonak retired from Barberi’s Lumber Yard, where he had been a truck driver for many years.   

He was a communicant of St. Peter’s Church in Great Barrington.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Bonak is survived by one daughter, Dorothy Thornton and her husand, Paul, of Naples, Fla; his brothers, John Bonak of California and Chester Bonak of Stockbridge; a sister, Alice Badurski of Stockbridge; three grandchildren, Lauren Herder and her husband, Carl, and Thomas Thornton and Lisa Thornton.

He was predeceased by his brothers Stanley, Anthony, Benjamin and Raymond; and a sister, Anna Bonak.

A liturgy of Christian burial was celebrated Jan. 27 at St. Peter’s Church in Great Barrington, the Rev. William Murphy officiating.  Burial was at St. Peter’s Cemetery in Great Barrington.

Arrangements are under the care of the Finnerty and Stevens Funeral Home in Great Barrington.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the St. Peter’s Church Ramp Fund or the Brain Tumor Research Fund of the American Cancer Society. Donations may be made through the Finnerty & Stevens Funeral Home, 426 Main St., Great Barrington, MA 01230.

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.

A Seder to savor in Sheffield

On April 23, Race Brook Lodge in Sheffield will host “Feast of Mystics,” a Passover Seder that promises to provide ecstasy for the senses.

“’The Feast of Mystics’ was a title we used for events back when I was running The New Shul,” said Rabbi Zach Fredman of his time at the independent creative community in the West Village in New York City.
