Lady Warriors soccer team falls twice to Dragons, triumphs over Bombers

WEBUTUCK — Between the rainfall, high winds and COVID-19 restrictions, the Webutuck varsity girls soccer team has persevered, putting its best foot forward on the field during its past couple of games.

Kicking off its first game of the season on Tuesday, March 16, the Lady Warriors competed in an away game against the Dover High School Dragons at 4:15 p.m. Webutuck ultimately lost the game, 3-0.

Webutuck Coach Mark Moren noted two of the goals were made as penalty kicks. He mentioned that Webutuck is playing with a very young team this year between the number of new players who joined as well as the many returning players who didn’t come back this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, Moren remarked that the students played really well in their first game.

Just a few days later in a rainy away game, the Lady Warriors competed against Stissing Mountain Junior/Senior High School on Thursday, March 18, at 4:15 p.m. in Pine Plains.

Among the game’s highlights, Moren acknowledged the back and forth between the evenly-matched teams, with Webutuck scoring the lead at 1-0, only for Stissing Mountain to tie at 1-1 on a penalty kick. Olivia Farnham and JoAnna Voigt each scored a point for Webutuck, resulting in Webutuck’s win over the Bombers with a final score of 2-1.

On Wednesday, March 24, Webutuck again faced off against Dover in another away game held at 4:15 p.m. Farnham scored a goal for Webutuck with assistance from teammate Erika Voigt. By game’s end, Dover was declared the victor with a score of 3-1 over Webutuck.

Kicking off the match at 4:15 p.m. on Friday, March 26, Webutuck and Stissing Mountain faced off against one another one more, this time on the field behind Webutuck High School. As he observed his players on the field, Moren said the game’s two goals were both scored going in the air.

“It was so windy out that the ball was basically in the air,” he said. “I’m still glad we got it in.”

Farnham scored a goal for Webutuck off a corner kick in the game’s first half while Tessa Blackurn scored a goal for Pine Plains in the second half. Competing as Webutuck’s keeper, Grainne Williams made six saves while Sarah Leach made six saves as the keeper for Pine Plains. By game’s end, the teams were tied with a score of 1-1.

As of Friday’s match on March 26, the Lady Warriors now has an overall season record of one win, one tie and two losses.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
