Vets, hogs, cards and BBQ… a fast and fun VFW fundraiser

DOVER — Revving their motors for a rollicking time, area motorcyclists were invited to play their poker hands at the Dover Veterans of Foreign War (VFW) Post 5444’s Poker Run on Saturday, June 4.

It was all in the name of a good cause as the VFW’s relief fund went to help Post 5444’s veterans in need.

Starting at 10 a.m., the poker run was hosted by the Post’s Cmdr. Madison Fletcher and the Hudson Valley Biker Network at the Post 5444 Route 22 home in Dover Plains.

After playing plenty of hands of fairly competitive poker, the bikers were invited to stick around to enjoy some tasty barbecue. Along with barbecue dinner there were raffles, live music and a cash bar.

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.
