Man injured in Wingdale mining accident

WINGDALE — The JH Ketchum Hose Company in Dover Plains, the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office and Dutchess County Emergency Response were among the first agencies to respond to the scene of a mining accident reported Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 14.

The accident occurred at Wingdale Materials, a company owned by the paving materials supplier Peckham Industries. Though his name hasn’t yet been reported, the 40 year old victim has been identified as a nine-year employee of Wingdale Materials, who was struck by a large rock was stuck in an excavator around 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon.

According to Dutchess County Commissioner of Emergency Response Dana Smith, JH Ketchum Fire Company was dispatched with a report of a man stuck in mining machinery. Firefighters from the Arlington, LaGrange and Poughkeepsie fire companies responded to the scene with JH Ketchum Hose Company acting as primary agency, freeing the man at around 3:30 p.m.

The man was later flown to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, N.Y., with a reported injury to his wrist.
