Thank you

I would like to extend an overdue THANK YOU to The Millerton News editors and staff for providing me a platform to voice the needs and concerns of our military and veterans — and to address our national security and the ever-growing rabid social discourse and hatred that have infected this country. I have been contributing regular commentaries/opinions for the past year. I offered sporadic contributions previously; you know by now I don’t mince words. I know there are many more patriotic readers than demagogues out there so I thank you patriots.

In my experience, The Millerton News has been fair and objective, taking no sides and allowing reasonable differences of opinion to be printed in a country where “Free Speech” can be abused. A country that is now infected with so called news media and publications that mostly spew outright lies, untruths and misleading information that sadly pass as journalism these days. Thankfully most stable minded individuals see through this bluster and charade. Those of us capable of thinking for ourselves rather than having a political party, government or an individual influence our opinions and decisions will prevail (independent thinkers and fact-checkers).

This country could be so much better. And in my humble opinion, today we’re on a positive roll due to logical minds. I respect differences of opinion. We don’t need to or want to close our minds. I would never get along with myself! Compromising on differences of opinion has always produced positive results. It’s when hatred and intolerance are injected that everything goes haywire.

In conclusion: Thank you Millerton News for providing our communities with fair, objective reporting, valuable personal, public, inspirational and interesting news. After this current health crisis ends, stop by and say “hi” to them some day. They are terrific individuals and will field your opinions and requests if possible. The News provides an invaluable community service. We cannot let honest news reporting slip away. Please consider monetary support to them if possible.

God bless you, patriotic readers and your families. Chin up — Phil says an early spring is upon us.

Reading between the lines in historic samplers

Alexandra Peter's collection of historic samplers includes items from the family of "The House of the Seven Gables" author Nathaniel Hawthorne.

Cynthia Hochswender

The home in Sharon that Alexandra Peters and her husband, Fred, have owned for the past 20 years feels like a mini museum. As you walk through the downstairs rooms, you’ll see dozens of examples from her needlework sampler collection. Some are simple and crude, others are sophisticated and complex. Some are framed, some lie loose on the dining table.

Many of them have museum cards, explaining where those samplers came from and why they are important.

Hotchkiss students team with Sharon Land Trust on conifer grove restoration

Oscar Lock, a Hotchkiss senior, got pointers and encouragement from Tim Hunter, stewardship director of The Sharon Land Trust, while sawing buckthorn.

John Coston

It was a ramble through bramble on Wednesday, April 17 as a handful of Hotchkiss students armed with loppers attacked a thicket of buckthorn and bittersweet at the Sharon Land Trust’s Hamlin Preserve.

The students learned about the destructive impact of invasives as they trudged — often bent over — across wet ground on the semblance of a trail, led by Tom Zetterstrom, a North Canaan tree preservationist and member of the Sharon Land Trust.
