Millbrook welcomes Santa

MILLBROOK — The holiday season kicked off in the town of Washington and the village of Millbrook with the Franklin Avenue tree lighting and a visit from Santa on Dec. 2. Around 500 people gathered at the bottom of Franklin Avenue in front of the Tribute Gardens for a tradition that’s more than 50 years old. The Millbrook Fire Department held a parade and drove trucks decorated in Christmas lights down Franklin Avenue. Santa made his entrance at the end of the parade. Santa’s appearance signaled the lighting of the tree ceremony, which was followed by hayrides through the village to see the decorated streets. The Millbrook Business Association decorated the trees throughout the village, creating a festive atmosphere. Families then gathered at the Millbrook firehouse to see Santa, Mrs. Claus and Mr. and Mrs. Gingerbread. Children sat on Santa’s lap and received a book, while the fire department’s Women’s Auxiliary served doughnuts and hot cocoa. The town of Washington Recreation Commission organized Santa’s visit. Recreation Director Warren McMillan said that this year’s ceremony had the largest turnout he has seen during his 17 years with the commission. The village will remain dressed for the holidays throughout the season.

The artistic life of Joelle Sander

"Flowers" by the late artist and writer Joelle Sander.

Cornwall Library

The Cornwall Library unveiled its latest art exhibition, “Live It Up!,” showcasing the work of the late West Cornwall resident Joelle Sander on Saturday, April 13. The twenty works on canvas on display were curated in partnership with the library with the help of her son, Jason Sander, from the collection of paintings she left behind to him. Clearly enamored with nature in all its seasons, Sander, who split time between her home in New York City and her country house in Litchfield County, took inspiration from the distinctive white bark trunks of the area’s many birch trees, the swirling snow of Connecticut’s wintery woods, and even the scenic view of the Audubon in Sharon. The sole painting to depict fauna is a melancholy near-abstract outline of a cow, rootless in a miasma haze of plum and Persian blue paint. Her most prominently displayed painting, “Flowers,” effectively builds up layers of paint so that her flurry of petals takes on a three-dimensional texture in their rough application, reminiscent of another Cornwall artist, Don Bracken.
