Making a Movie, In Salisbury

Harry Bainbridge makes movies. He made one at Hotchkissabout a cardboard boat race. He made another about discrimination. And now, with a little help from friends and neighbors, he will be making a movie titled “Michael.” The plot is based, in part, on his own life and is set at Indian Mountain School where he was a student. A few months before he was born, Bainbridge’s father died aboard Pan Am flight 103, which was exploded by a terrorist bomb over Lockerbie, Scotland, Dec. 21, 1988. The 9/11 attack, when he was 12 at IMS, was a very disturbing event for him. “I was very calm at the time,” he recalls. “I had learned to be calm in relation to such an event.” The movie he is making is about that day and the way people responded to the attacks. Now, with the cast set, he is looking for extras: boys and girls ages 10 to 15, and adults age 30 and older. Shooting at IMS begins June 24 and runs through July 3. Anyone interested in taking part in the filming may contact Bainbridge at www.harry@michaelthemovie.com.

Magic Fluke Ukulele Shop and True Wheels Bicycle Shop are not only under the same roof in a beautiful solar powered building on Route 7 in Sheffield, but they are also both run by the Webb family, telling a tale of familial passion, innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability.

In the late ‘90s, Dale Webb was working in engineering and product design at a corporate job. “I took up instrument manufacturing as a fun challenge,” said Dale. After an exhibit at The National Association of Music Merchants in Anaheim, California, in 1999, The Magic Fluke company was born. “We were casting finger boards and gluing these things together in our basement in New Hartford and it just took off,” Dale explained. “It was really a wild ride, it kind of had a life of its own.”
