Gartersnakes such as this one — found in Salisbury over the weekend — are ubiquitous, friendly and not venomous. Nonetheless, don’t try to pick one up. Their bite will not kill you but it will certainly hurt. Photo by James H. Clark

Who’s that friendly guy in your garden?

In case you were wondering, gartersnakes got their name because of their resemblance to the garters that men used to use to hold their socks up — even though to modern eyes, they more closely resemble garden hoses.

Poets Corner

Once again, The Lakeville Journal will provide space to poets who feel inspired to share their thoughts with our readers. It’s been a while since we did this, but June seems like the perfect month to start again. The topics can be varied, but political opinion will remain under Letters to the Editor.

Honoring sacrifices

The Couch Pipa VFW Honor Guard visited cemeteries in Falls Village and North Canaan on Memorial Day, offering an invocation, gun salute and taps. One stop was at the Lower Road Cemetery. Two stops were also made at Geer in North Canaan.
